what I’m reading: december 2017 & january 2018

When I was home for winter break (seems so long ago but it was literally last week…), I did one thing that I don’t get to do often at school: read! I knocked out five books over the break and two of them I read all in one day. Check out what I recommend below!

Hannah's Book Club: December and January

Emmy and Oliver by Robin Benway – ★★★★

I loved this book and read it all in a day! It’s definitely an easy read, but it was just a fun, feel-good book. I thought it would be more ‘deep’ from the book description, but it was pretty simple. However, it was still a fun story.

From Goodreads:
Emmy’s best friend, Oliver, reappears after being kidnapped by his father ten years ago. Emmy hopes to pick up their relationship right where it left off. Are they destined to be together? Or has fate irreparably driven them apart?

A Stranger in the House by Shari Lapena – ★★★

This book was not my favorite, but the plot was interesting. It was very slow in the middle as they were trying to solve the mystery. I thought I guessed ‘whodunit’ but the ending totally shocked me! The author certainly led you to believe it was someone else throughout the whole book until just the last few pages.

From Goodreads:
Karen and Tom Krupp are happy—they’ve got a lovely home in upstate New York, they’re practically newlyweds, and they have no kids to interrupt their comfortable life together. But one day, Tom returns home to find Karen has vanished—her car’s gone and it seems she left in a rush. She even left her purse—complete with phone and ID—behind.

There’s a knock on the door—the police are there to take Tom to the hospital where his wife has been admitted. She had a car accident, and lost control as she sped through the worst part of town.

The accident has left Karen with a concussion and a few scrapes. Still, she’s mostly okay—except that she can’t remember what she was doing or where she was when she crashed. The cops think her memory loss is highly convenient, and they suspect she was up to no good.

Karen returns home with Tom, determined to heal and move on with her life. Then she realizes something’s been moved. Something’s not quite right. Someone’s been in her house. And the police won’t stop asking questions.

Because in this house, everyone’s a stranger. Everyone has something they’d rather keep hidden. Something they might even kill to keep quiet.

The Lying Game by Ruth Ware – ★★★★

Loved this one! It’s an intense mystery that didn’t feel slow to me at all (which is my biggest problem with mystery novels). I found this from Reese Witherspoon’s book club and anything Reese recommends is typically five stars in my book. This didn’t disappoint. The author, Ruth Ware, has been called “the Agatha Christie of our time” which is high praise! I liked this the most because there were several different subplots running throughout the main plot that kept you guessing. There was just about everything in this–romance, mystery, nostalgia–and that kept my attention. (The Woman in Cabin 10, her other popular book, is next on my list!)

From Goodreads:
On a cool June morning, a woman is walking her dog in the idyllic coastal village of Salten along a tidal estuary known as the Reach. Before she can stop him, the dog charges into the water to retrieve what first appears to be a wayward stick, but to her horror, turns out to be something much more sinister…

The next morning, three women in and around London—Fatima, Thea, and Isabel—receive the text they had always hoped would NEVER come, from the fourth in their formerly inseparable clique, Kate, that says only, “I need you.”

The four girls were best friends at Salten, a second-rate boarding school set near the cliffs of the English Channel. Each different in their own way, the four became inseparable and were notorious for playing the Lying Game, telling lies at every turn to both fellow boarders and faculty, with varying states of serious and flippant nature that were disturbing enough to ensure that everyone steered clear of them. The myriad and complicated rules of the game are strict: no lying to each other—ever. Bail on the lie when it becomes clear it is about to be found out. But their little game had consequences, and the girls were all expelled in their final year of school under mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of the school’s eccentric art teacher, Ambrose (who also happens to be Kate’s father).

Hanna Who Fell from the Sky by Christopher Meade – ★

I read this book in a day, but I actually hated it! I thought this was meant to be a dystopian novel sort of like Handmaid’s Tale, but it actually had a weird supernatural element that didn’t make any sense to me. The beginning half of the book was intriguing and I was liking the idea of the plot, but once the supernatural element was introduced, it totally ruined the book for me. I can’t really say much more without ruining the story, but I don’t recommend this.

From Goodreads:
Hanna has never been outside her secluded community of Clearhaven. She has never questioned why her father has four wives or why she has fourteen brothers and sisters. And in only one week, on her eighteenth birthday, Hanna will follow tradition and become the fifth wife of a man more than twice her age.

But just days before the wedding, Hanna meets Daniel, an enigmatic stranger who challenges her to question her fate and to follow her own will. Then her mother tells her a secret–one that could grant Hanna the freedom she’s known only in her dreams. As her world unravels around her, Hanna must decide whether she was really meant for something greater than the claustrophobic world of Clearhaven. But can she abandon her beloved younger sister and the only home she’s ever known? Or is there another option–one too fantastical to believe?

The Magnolia Story by Chip and Joanna Gaines – ★★★★★

photo by @hannahwacamera (me!) on instagram

I loved this! I am way late to the game in reading this book but loved it nevertheless. It tells the story of Chip and Joanna Gaines and how they’ve built up a whole business around their design skills and thinking. I’ve had the opportunity to go visit Magnolia Silos in Waco, Texas and liked it a lot, but didn’t understand the full extent of what the Gaines have put into their business. This gave me a new appreciation for the two of them and I want to watch this last season before their show goes off-air. I also want to read Chip’s book, Capital Gaines, to learn about his entrepreneurial thinking.

From Goodreads:
The Magnolia Story is the first book from Chip and Joanna, offering their fans a detailed look at their life together. From the very first renovation project they ever tackled together, to the project that nearly cost them everything; from the childhood memories that shaped them, to the twists and turns that led them to the life they share on the farm today.

Currently reading: Galloway’s Book on Running by Jeff Galloway…stay tuned for that riveting review 😉

Junior Year Update

Hi everyone! I just finished my first semester of junior year and I thought I’d share a more personal look into how my life went.

School

I’m still a graphic design and journalism major. It was a pretty tough semester on me in terms of workload even though I only technically took 3 “real” classes. I took 12 credits of classes, 6 classes overall. Mondays and Wednesdays consisted of Women’s Strength Lifting from 9am to 10am, then Typography from 11:30am to 2:30pm.

Strength Lifting

I loved my strength lifting class and highly recommend taking a class like this, or an intro to weights class if they offer them at your campuses’ rec center! Having it with only girls in the class made me feel comfortable if I didn’t know a certain exercise or if one of the other girls in the class pointed out my improper form. We would have a sheet for every day and now I have a full binder of workouts from my whole semester. I definitely noticed a big improvement in my fitness overall and I’d love to share a workout routine if you’re interested.

me after a required yoga course…I also learned that I absolutely hate yoga, haha

Typography

My typography class was very hard. The whole graphic design program at my school is really hard, not going to lie, and a lot of work, but it definitely pays off in the end. There were several nights I was up til at least 1 or 2am working on my projects due for the next day. This was my favorite project of the semester when we got to rebrand an airport anywhere in the world. (Any other design majors out there? I’d love to follow you on Behance!)

Tuesdays and Thursdays consisted of Intro to 10K Training from 8am to 9am (ish), Message Development (journalism) at 9:30am to 10:45am, and Principles of Visual Communication from 11:30am to 2:30pm. On Tuesdays I’d also have my journalism lab from 2:30pm to 3;45pm and every other Thursday for the first half of the semester was a Hallmark Symposium lecture.

Running

Intro to 10K training was a true mental test! All the class essentially consisted of was showing up in proper workout attire and running. We also had a few lectures about proper nutrition, foam rolling, etc. I began to learn that I actually enjoyed running (what?) and especially enjoyed running longer distances. This class motivated me to get out and run–because getting a B in my 1-credit running class would be extremely lame.post-run view on campus

Journalism

My journalism class was fairly easy and we just created several different television, radio, and print ads. I’m a fan of this one that I made–I thought it was pretty clever. This class wasn’t particularly difficult, but because it was right after my running class, I found it difficult to stay awake sometimes! I would have thought that working out in the morning would keep me energized but it had the opposite effect sometimes. I’m still trying to figure that one out–I think it may have been an issue with not eating enough after running.

Design

My other design class was also difficult. I found that I enjoyed these sorts of projects more. We designed two posters for an event (I picked Carnival in Rio), an album cover for Nirvana, a restaurant rebranding, and a motion graphic. The motion graphic was our last project in tandem with our type project, and I loved learning Adobe After Effects for this project. We were assigned a font and then had to illustrate certain characteristics of the font.

My journalism lab was just an extension of the lecture class. The Thursday class, Hallmark Symposium, is a lecture series presented by Hallmark (did you know they’re headquartered in Kansas City?) by notable designers and artists. We had to attend 5 out of the 7 lectures offered so I just knocked out the first five in a row. The most exciting speaker was Andy Beall, a Pixar animator who’s worked on several noteworthy films like Up, WALL-E, The Incredibles (I and II), Brave, Ratatouille, Monsters University, and more! It was very cool to hear his insight on the little nuances that make great designs.

Sorority

As you might know, I’m an Alpha Delta Pi and I’m living in the house again this semester. It’s extremely convenient and I like living close to all my friends in the house. However, as I’ve gotten older I’m excited to live in my own house next year with several of my friends! I also finished up my position as PR chair and decided not to run for a position again.

my roommates and me at semiformal!

Etc

I love my job more than ever and I’m enjoying every second of it. I got to work during fall camp in place of sorority recruitment and it was the best decision for me. It still makes me laugh thinking of how I got involved in this. Even though most of my childhood was spent going to every home KU football game imaginable, I’d spend practically all of them reading or playing on my Nintendo DS. I also spent more time than ever hanging out with my friends and developing closer friendships, and I’m especially thankful for that.

one of the many treats at fall camp 🙂

As of now, I’m taking an ethics class over winter break. I’m also attempting Vlogmas! My first two videos are up on my channel now. I’d love if you watched them and subscribed as well! My first two videos were interesting but I’ve decided to only make videos on days that I’m doing exciting things. I don’t like watching vlogs of other people sitting around and studying, so I chose to wait until winter break to start filming. If they go well then I think I might continue until I get back from winter break.

Thanks for reading!

2017 Gift Guide: For the Fitness Guru

I’m back with another gift guide! I made this gift guide for the fitness guru in your life – whether they’re obsessed with yoga or running, this guide is perfect for all athletes of any fitness level. (P.S. I’m in finals week right now so I’m working through that, but once I finish I plan on producing a lot more content! Thanks for bearing with me!)

2017 Gift Guide: For the Fitness Guru

Wireless Earbuds: Perfect for working out without getting cords tangled up in the way!

SpiBelt: This running belt holds your phone, ID, keys, etc when you’re working out. I prefer this to an armband because they don’t bounce as much.

Sneakers: These Adidas shoes are my favorite (I have them in navy). The cloudfoam insert feels like memory foam and I could wear these shoes all day.

Garmin watch: I asked for this for Christmas! While it’s certainly an investment, it doubles as a workout watch and a smartwatch. I think the design is sleek enough that you could wear it in the gym and to class.

Fitbit Charge 2: I currently own this Fitbit and I’m definitely a fan. I’m wanting to upgrade to the Garmin because it has a built-in GPS, but for the casual gym-goer in your life, this Fitbit is perfect.

Headbands: Any girl needs a headband to keep her hair clipped back while she’s working out. And with the trend of guys having longer hair, this could be helpful for your guy friends as well!

Running shirt: Ever since I started running in tech shirts and not old cotton t-shirts, I can’t go back. This long-sleeved shirt would help keep your friend warm throughout working out in the winter.

Race registration: This obviously pertains to your friend and location, but I think race registration is a great gift idea for someone that already runs and is wanting to run a race. I would ask them beforehand if they were interested though – it may ruin the gift idea but you don’t want to give the wrong idea!

S’well bottle: Vacuum insulated water bottles are the best ones out there and I prefer Hydroflask above the rest. They will keep your water cold literally all day and they don’t have a gross metallic taste. I also prefer the sport cap!

Thanks for reading!

How to Have the Perfect Game Watch Party #PlayPauseRefresh

This shop/post has been compensated by Collective Bias, INC. and The Coca-Cola Company, all opinions are mine alone. #PlayPauseRefresh #CollectiveBias

The best part about going to my school is being able to attend all the basketball games! I’ve always loved cheering on my team, but it’s even better cheering them on with my friends. Whenever we have away games, my friends and I always watch them together.

For game nights, I’m always sure to stock up on my favorite drinks and foods from the grocery store. For drinks, that includes Diet Coke® and Sprite®–two of my favorites! Both these drinks are so refreshing and the perfect thing to reach for after a long day of class.

Speaking of Coca-Cola™ …if you’re looking to win up to $500 in gift cards and prizes (and come on, what college student isn’t?), you can show how you #PlayPauseRefresh in this sweepstake contest. All you have to do is follow these three easy steps.

  1. Pick up your favorite Coca-Cola beverage and Program Your Night.
  2. Take a photo of how you enjoy Coca-Cola during TV night. Make sure the program you are watching stays on your TV but out of your photo.
  3. Share your photo on Twitter or Instagram with both #programyournight and #sweepstakes for a chance to win cool prizes.

Obviously, you can’t have a watch party without snacks! Here’s a quick, easy recipe that literally anyone can make–especially college students without access to an oven.

on the blog today: I'm sharing my favorite Coca-Cola drinks and a quick recipe so you can have the best game watch party! #PausePlayRefresh #ad

For this quick recipe, I found some flavors that would pair well with popcorn and the drinks. I picked cinnamon sugar, a white cheddar mix, cranberries, and pumpkin pie. I’d recommend going lighter with the cinnamon sugar and pumpkin spice because they can be fairly strong, but you can use as much white cheddar mix and cranberries as you’d like.

on the blog today: I'm sharing my favorite Coca-Cola drinks and a quick recipe so you can have the best game watch party! #PausePlayRefresh #ad

Ingredients needed to serve 2-3 people, add more toppings as needed:

2 tbsp white cheddar flavoring
1 tbsp pumpkin pie spice
1 single-serve cranberry box
2 tbsp cinnamon sugar

Recipe instructions:

1. Gather all ingredients. All can be found at your local grocery store!
2. Place each flavoring in their own small bowl or cup to season the popcorn.
3. Fill the paper cups with popcorn.
4. Let people pick their own flavorings!

October Favorites | 2017

Today I’m back with a recap of my October favorites. Hope you enjoy!

Youtube happenings

I finished my bid day video! It took a long time to go through and edit, but I’m really pleased with the final product. I also made a video all about what’s in my backpack. I love watching those and had fun filming it.

I’m also doing a lot more hands-on work with my job in football and I’m trying to create more videos for our Twitter feed. This one is one of my favorites, if you want to check it out!

Songs I’m loving…

This playlist is definitely all over the place, but hey, I never claimed to be a DJ ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It’s definitely based off of Charlie Puth’s new song, How Long. I saw him open for Shawn Mendes this August and I’ve been kind of obsessed ever since.

Side note: I can’t wait for Taylor Swift’s album to drop this week (Friday)!! I’m a huge fan and I’m loving her new music.

Posts from October

September | Hannah’s Book Club

Recap into my life

1: As the weather drops, I’ve been dressing a lot nicer! It’s so easy to throw on a t-shirt and shorts for class but the cooler weather forces me into sweaters and jeans. I’m planning out more style posts so look forward to those on the blog soon!

2: I signed up for a half marathon…(!!) I’ve been loving my running class and the feeling I get after accomplishing a run, so I wanted to sign up for a race that would give me something to work towards. I even scheduled my classes around this for next semester so I’ll have time during the day to train. I’m excited but definitely nervous!

3: For my latest design project, I redesigned a record album cover for when Nirvana performed at the University of Kansas before they really ‘made it big.’ At first, I was so opposed to this project and couldn’t tell you one Nirvana song from another. I’m still not a huge fan, but I definitely have a newfound appreciation for their music after this project.

Thanks for reading!

Friday Faves | 10.6.17.

I’m so ready for October and to be done with September. I’ve planned out my classes for next semester already and truthfully, I’m feeling ready for next year.

1: I finished my first design projects of the semester! I’m looking forward to sharing more of my work on my blog as I finish my projects. Subtle plug…if you’re a designer too, follow me on Behance!

My first project is a type poster advertising Rio’s Carnival. We were only allowed to use type, color and scale in the design.

The second project is a re-branding of London Heathrow’s airport. When making the logo, we could only use the airport code — LHR — using only one font. This was my first project in my type design class and it was definitely interesting to struggle through using Adobe Illustrator.

Right now, we’re working on an album cover in one class and a magazine spread in the other class. I can’t wait to share the final results.

2: Speaking of next year, I just signed a lease for living in a house for my senior year. It’s crazy to think about senior year already, but I’m excited to be living out of my sorority house. This will be the first time I’ve had my own room again since high school, and I’m already thinking about decorating.

While the house will look nothing like these homes on my Pinterest board, I can still dream…

3: I wrote a new blog post this week: September | Hannah’s Book Club. Let me know if you liked it — I enjoyed writing it and would love to write more book reviews (maybe a little more comprehensive next time).

4: As the weather finally gets cooler, I’m looking forward to breaking out fall styles. I’m loving this moto jacket and the idea of styling it, but truthfully, if it’s not a shade of blue or red, it probably won’t match my closet…

This sweater is definitely up my alley and looks so cozy. This bomber jacket (in navy, of course) would be a fun addition to my closet for the fall too. It’s a little edgy and certainly different from my typical preppy style, but I think I could create some interesting outfits with it.

Thanks for reading!

September | Hannah’s Book Club

As September wraps up, I’m recapping all the books that I’ve read through August and September! I like having the option of a library book by my bed to read at night or in between classes instead of just scrolling through my phone. Just having it available makes me so much more inclined to read the book. Growing up, I was always a huge reader and I’m glad I’ve been able to keep that up through college.

September | Hannah's Book Club | Hannah With a Camera

Proof I’ve always been a reader…thanks, Mom, for teaching me early on 🙂

Maybe in Paris by Rebecca Christiansen – ★★ (2 stars)

photo from Goodreads

Clearly this month I’ve been inspired by traveling! I didn’t like the main character, Keira, from the start. She came off as whiny and selfish…and stayed that way til the last few pages. While I liked the descriptions of Paris, Keira got in the way and her self-centered attitude made me frustrated with her actions. The writing was also very basic—but to be fair, when it’s written from the mind of a selfish 18-year-old, there’s not much you can do. I would have liked to see it written from both Keira and Levi’s perspectives.

From Goodreads:
Keira Braidwood lands in Paris with her autistic brother, Levi, and high hopes. Levi has just survived a suicide attempt and months in the psych ward—he’s ready for a dose of the wider world. Unlike their helicopter mom and the doctors who hover over Levi, Keira doesn’t think Levi’s certifiable. He’s just . . . quirky. Always has been.

Those quirks quickly begin to spoil the trip. Keira wants to traipse all over Europe; Levi barely wants to leave their grubby hotel room. She wants to dine on the world’s cuisine; he only wants fast food. Levi is one giant temper tantrum, and Keira’s ready to pull out her own hair.

She finally finds the adventure she craves in Gable, a hot Scottish bass player, but while Keira flirts in the Paris Catacombs, Levi’s mental health breaks. He disappears from their hotel room and Keira realizes, too late, that her brother is sicker than she was willing to believe. To bring him home safe, Keira must tear down the wall that Levi’s sickness and her own guilt have built between them.

Love and Gelato by Jenna Evans Welch—★★★☆ (3.5 stars)

photo from withsheena.com

I loved this book! It’s definitely more of a summery read. I’ve also been studying some basic Italian, so it was fun to read the Italian words scattered throughout and actually understand them. Love and Gelato does a good job of intertwining the story with the history and culture of Italy. Lina was an enjoyable character to follow along with and the format of the book – Lina’s story with her mother’s journal entries – was an interesting twist.

From Goodreads:
“I made the wrong choice.”

Lina is spending the summer in Tuscany, but she isn’t in the mood for Italy’s famous sunshine and fairy-tale landscape. She’s only there because it was her mother’s dying wish that she get to know her father. But what kind of father isn’t around for sixteen years? All Lina wants to do is get back home.

But then she is given a journal that her mom had kept when she lived in Italy. Suddenly Lina’s uncovering a magical world of secret romances, art, and hidden bakeries. A world that inspires Lina, along with the ever-so-charming Ren, to follow in her mother’s footsteps and unearth a secret that has been kept for far too long. It’s a secret that will change everything she knew about her mother, her father—and even herself.

People come to Italy for love and gelato, someone tells her, but sometimes they discover much more.

Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson – ★★★ (3 stars)

photo from whatlaurendidtoday.blogspot.com

I read Speak by Anderson back in middle school, and I remember not understanding the main plot points, but re-reading it in high school and fully understanding the point of the whole book. Wintergirls is similar, focusing on a very tough topic of eating disorders, but in a lot more graphic way. This book was extremely well-written and sensitive to the topic; however, I did find it hard to read at different times. I read it only in short bursts and was glad when I was done. Personally, I wasn’t a fan of the topic, even though I did find the book interesting.

From Goodreads:
“Dead girl walking,” the boys say in the halls.
“Tell us your secret,” the girls whisper, one toilet to another.
I am that girl.
I am the space between my thighs, daylight shining through.
I am the bones they want, wired on a porcelain frame.

Lia and Cassie are best friends, wintergirls frozen in matchstick bodies, competitors in a deadly contest to see who can be the skinniest. But what comes after size zero and size double-zero? When Cassie succumbs to the demons within, Lia feels she is being haunted by her friend’s restless spirit.

The Breakdown by B.A. Paris – ★★★★ (4 stars)

photo from mainandmaple.com

This makes me laugh a little to include this book, because while I enjoy this kind of thrillers, this is exactly my mom’s kind of book! Anything murder-mystery is totally up her alley. I read this on the plane coming home and it kept my attention the entire time. There were times that I was getting very frustrated with the main character seemingly going crazy. I came up with a really interesting theory along the way that even had my mom convinced at one point, but the ending totally surprised me! The thing I like about thrillers is not being able to predict the ending at all, and this one really stood out.

From Goodreads:
If you can’t trust yourself, who can you trust?

Cass is having a hard time since the night she saw the car in the woods, on the winding rural road, in the middle of a downpour, with the woman sitting inside―the woman who was killed. She’s been trying to put the crime out of her mind; what could she have done, really? It’s a dangerous road to be on in the middle of a storm. Her husband would be furious if he knew she’d broken her promise not to take that shortcut home. And she probably would only have been hurt herself if she’d stopped.

But since then, she’s been forgetting every little thing: where she left the car, if she took her pills, the alarm code, why she ordered a pram when she doesn’t have a baby.

The only thing she can’t forget is that woman, the woman she might have saved, and the terrible nagging guilt.

Or the silent calls she’s receiving, or the feeling that someone’s watching her…

The Lying Game by Sara Shepard – ★★★★ (4 stars)

photo from goodreads.com

I just finished this book and I’m so intrigued by what will happen next. Sara Shepard wrote Pretty Little Liars too, which I’ve been wanting to watch but honestly, I think it’d scare me too much. I remember trying to read the first chapter of the first book when I was sleeping over at my cousin’s house in middle school (maybe younger!) and I couldn’t handle it. This book is scary in a sense as well, but I’ve grown out of it a bit since being 12! Although it is based in high school and can seem immature at times, it’s a fun read and keeps up the suspense. I’m glad it’s a series and drags out the plot so I can get the full story on every character.

From Goodreads:
I had a life anyone would kill for.

Then someone did.

The worst part of being dead is that there’s nothing left to live for. No more kisses. No more secrets. No more gossip. It’s enough to kill a girl all over again. But I’m about to get something no one else does–an encore performance, thanks to Emma, the long-lost twin sister I never even got to meet.

Now Emma’s desperate to know what happened to me. And the only way to figure it out is to be me–to slip into my old life and piece it all together. But can she laugh at inside jokes with my best friends? Convince my boyfriend she’s the girl he fell in love with? Pretend to be a happy, care-free daughter when she hugs my parents goodnight? And can she keep up the charade, even after she realizes my murderer is watching her every move?

Thanks for reading!

xo, Hannah
